Who this is for

  • Beginners who want a week-by-week start, not a pile of conflicting tips.
  • People who already tried retinol and came away burned, stung, or flaky.
  • EU readers working around the 0.3% retinol cap on face products.

Not for you if

  • You're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
  • You use a prescription retinoid or isotretinoin. Your prescriber leads.
  • You want a diagnosis or treatment. We don't do that.
The purge-or-reaction flowchart from the Retinol Start Map. Usual spots can be a purge; a rash in a new place means stop.

Purge or reaction? The flowchart from the guide.

  1. Usual spots, about 2–6 weeks: hold your frequency and add nothing new.
  2. Burning, stinging, redness, flaking, or a rash in a new area: stop or reduce, and see a dermatologist if it is severe.

The Retinol Start Map and Reset & Reintroduce are $9.99 each. Already irritated? Start with the reset: 7–14 days to settle, then bring products back. Or get both guides for $14.99 instead of $19.98 (save 25%).

Or buy one guide

Everyone says 'start slow.' Nobody says what that means.

Twice a week? Every other night? Is this stinging normal? Is it purging or a breakout? Can you still use your vitamin C? The internet gives you twenty rules that contradict each other. So you either give up after two weeks, or push through and damage your skin barrier.

The Retinol Start Map replaces the noise with one clear default for each situation.

Three steps. Fifteen minutes to set up.

  1. 1

Check you're ready. A one-page safety check and a quick quiz. If retinol isn't right for you yet, we'll tell you what to do instead.

  2. 2

Set your three routines. Morning, retinol night and rest night, written on one card for your mirror.

  3. 3

Follow the 12-week calendar. Step up after two calm weeks. Step back after a wobble. A flowchart for every 'is this normal?' moment.

Questions

Is this medical advice?

No. It's an educational guide that organises well-sourced, conservative defaults. It doesn't diagnose or treat. Follow your labels and your prescriber, and see a professional if your skin reacts badly.

Which retinol should I buy?

The map shows you how to choose (type, strength, format) and gives examples by category from many countries. It never ranks products and has no affiliate links.

I'm in the EU. Does the 0.3% limit matter?

It means face cosmetics sold in the EU contain at most 0.3% retinol (from November 2025 for new products, May 2027 for all). That's plenty for most people; the map explains it, and what it doesn't cover (retinal).

I use tretinoin / adapalene / isotretinoin. Is this for me?

Not as a dosing plan; your prescriber leads. Worksheet 4 can help you prepare for appointments.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Don't start retinoids then; ask your doctor, midwife or pharmacist.
